UPLINK Kyoto

A collaborative event between KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025 Artist JR and UPLINK Kyoto. Each screening will be accompanied by a behind-the-scenes making-of video of “The Chronicles of Kyoto, 2024,” a large-scale photographic installation by JR that captures the people and stories of Kyoto!
Agnès Varda, the pioneering female filmmaker also known as the “grandmother of the Nouvelle Vague,” was awarded the Palme d'Or Honorary Mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, the sixth person ever to receive such an honor, and the Academy Honorary Mention in 2017, for her more than 60 years of filmmaking. And French artist JR (JR), known for his participatory art project “Inside Out,” in which large portraits of people living in various places, from large cities to war zones, are pasted up.
"Visages Villages (Face to Face)" is a heartwarming road movie-style documentary in which these two artists travel through the French countryside, interacting with the ordinary people who live in the villages and creating works of art together.
The film won the “Reuille d'Or” (Golden Eye) for best documentary at the 70th Cannes International Film Festival, and the People's Choice Award (Audience Award), the top prize in the documentary category, at the Toronto International Film Festival in the same year. The film was also nominated for the 90th Academy Awards and the 43rd Cesar Awards.
