K-01 (Irish series), 2018 © Eamonn Doyle

“Here I was born, and there I died. It was only a moment for you; you took no notice.” — Vertigo, Alfred Hitchcock

In this talk, surrounded by the spectral figures of the work, Eamonn, David and Niall will discuss the K series, its evolution, themes and production, and how this unique presentation of the series at Higashihonganji O-genkan came about.

They will take you across not only the deeply stratified landscapes of grief, but also the primordial landscapes of the wild Atlantic edge of Ireland, sculpted by the elements and time, and then across ancient waves to the south west of Spain and Northern Africa. Along the way, they will reflect on their many years of collaborating, in photography, K series.

For K, David worked with a rare recording of an Irish keen, a traditional form of lamentation song for the dead. In his composition, which in the exhibition seems to emanate from the images themselves, the disembodied keening voice of a woman has become displaced and adrift in time. Shaped and broadcast by the wind, it flickers in fragments becoming compressed and stretched, and then folds into the groaning layers of rock below.

Following the talk, David will perform a newly composed sound work focused on voice and utterance, expanding on the thoughts that sit at the heart of K.

  • Eamonn Doyle (KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025 Artist)

Born in Dublin in 1969, Eamonn Doyle studied painting and photography. He founded the internationally acclaimed D1 Recordings in 1996 and spent much of the next 20 years producing music and working in the independent music business.
In 2008 Doyle returned to photography and his subsequent Dublin trilogy of work (i, ON, End.), formed the centre-piece exhibition at Rencontres d'Arles in 2016. Fundación Mapfre Madrid staged the first comprehensive exhibition of his work in 2019. In 2024 Doyle was awarded The David Octavius Hill Medal by The German Photographic Academy. Doyle still lives and works where it all began, just off Parnell Street in Dublin. His music continues to feature as a fundamental aspect of his work, particularly in exhibitions and collaborative film works.

Doyle will exhibit the series K at KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025. In K, Doyle reflects on the impact of his brother's sudden passing on their mother, Kathryn. He layers the letters Kathryn wrote to her late son with images of a shrouded, spectral figure together with a specially composed sound work by David Donohoe based on Irish lamentation song, to create a powerful meditation on grief through photography, metaphor and sound.

  • Niall Sweeney (Designer and Curator)

Born in Dublin in 1967, Niall is a designer, artist and theatre-maker. In 2000, he founded the multi-award-winning creative studio Pony Ltd in London, together with electronic musician and designer Nigel Truswell, making work internationally in art, design, print, theatre, film, performance, installation, music, publishing and writing. Niall has collaborated with Eamonn since the early 1990s, from the many years of music through to the photo-works, books, exhibitions and films.
