In this artist tour, the artist herself and curator Elena Navarro will provide commentary on the wroks featured in the exhibition "Graciela Iturbide". Addtionally, Graciela's son, Mauricio Rocha Iturbide, a renowned architect in Mexico, will discuss the scenography of the exhibition.

  • Graciela Iturbide (KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025 Artist)

    Born in 1942 in Mexico City, Graciela Iturbide studied film at the Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 1969, where she was influenced by the acclaimed Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo.
    Graciela is known for her black-and-white images of the local communities in her native Mexico. In 1979 she published Juchitán de las Mujeres, a book of photographs that inspired her lifelong support of feminist causes.
    She has photographed in the Sonoran Desert and Juchitán de Zaragoza (Mexico), as well as in Cuba, Panama, India, Argentina, and the United States. Graciela has received several awards, including the Hasselblad and the William Klein Award, the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in Mexico and the decoration of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

    At KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025 Graciela will present her first major show in Japan spanning her life's work.

  • Elena Navarro (Curator)

    Elena Navarro is a photography curator, producer, consultant, and manager based in Mexico City and Madrid. She is the founder and artistic director of the International Photography Festival FOTOMÉXICO, a platform for reflection, dissemination, and photographic production. She previously directed the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City before founding Espacio V, a non-profit foundation that aims to increase the presence of contemporary photography in the daily lives of people in Latin America, in 2020.
    Throughout her career, Elena Navarro has established and strengthened collaborative bridges in the cultural ecosystem of photography and image-making through projects between institutions, museums, public and private collections, artists, and creators. In the last decade, she has focused on making the work of women artists and creators from Mexico and Latin America visible, in dialogue with Europe, the United States, and the rest of the world.
    Elena has also served as a juror, nominator, and portfolio reviewer for several awards and was the Cultural Director of the Magnum Photos 75th Anniversary Project in New York in 2022. She is currently the Latin American and Spanish Ambassador for Paris Photo. She was a guest curator for Voices, the new sector of the fair in 2024.

  • Mauricio Rocha Iturbide (Scenographer/ Architect)

    Mauricio Rocha Iturbide (b. 1965) founded his Mexico City-based practice, Taller de Arquitectura | Mauricio Rocha, in 1991. With over 30 years of experience, the firm is dedicated to creating contemporary architecture that is deeply sensitive to its context and the environment.
    Taller works across a wide range of scales and programs, from small interventions to large public spaces. The practice seamlessly integrates local materials with cutting-edge technology, ensuring every project embodies dignity, quality, and a thoughtful balance of context, typology, and user needs.
    Over the course of its career, Taller has garnered significant recognition, including gold and silver medals in various national and international architectural biennales. The firm was honored with the Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York and the Médaille d’Or Palmarès from the Academy of Architecture of France in 2019.
    Most recently, Taller received the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP) in 2023, which celebrates excellence in built work across the Americas.
