Let's make your original Shōki using ceramic clay and take photos with an instant camera!
Once the clay dries after a few days, the instructor will fire the pieces, and you'll receive your finished Shōki later.
In the past, people used to say they "burn" (yaku) photographic prints, just as ceramics are also created by firing (yaku) clay. This workshop is held in conjunction with the first GOJOGRAPHIE event, aimed at revitalizing Kyoto’s Gojō area—famous for Kyō-yaki pottery—through photography collaborations and it is linked to exhibitions by Yuki Iwanami (KG+ [No.36 (tentative)]) and Naoyuki Ogino (KG+ [No.29 (tentative)]).
Shōki (鍾馗) is a protective deity of exorcism and academic success, originally from China. He is famous for appearing in the dream of an emperor of the Tang Dynasty and driving away evil spirits. In Kyoto, many Shōki statues stand on rooftops, especially in the Higashiyama area, guarding the city.
