Yoriyas (Yassine Alaoui Ismaili)
Yoriyas is a Moroccan photographer and choreographer. He first made his name as a professional breakdancer before pursuing a career in photography in 2015. Yoriyas was recently identified by The New York Times as an artist to follow.
His work, which ranges from performance to photography, focuses on how we inhabit and appropriate urban and public spaces. He documents daily life and societal changes in Morocco – particularly in Casablanca, his home town – and in Africa. Yoriyas’ candid shots are characterised by an intuitive quality and deliberate use of colour, and balanced yet complex compositions. He draws on his experience with choreography to garner fresh points of view through space and movement.
Yoriyas has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the International Prize for Contemporary Photography – CAP Prize 2018, the Friends of the IMA Prize for contemporary Arab creation, and the Taklif Prize at the Contemporary Dance Festival On Marche Marrakech 2023. In November 2023 he took part in a residency in Kyoto as part of KYOTOGRAPHIE’s African Residency Program.
