ARTIST TALK “Colored Black” - A Talk with British Jamaican Artist : Dennis Morris & Visual Culture Researcher: Morihiro Satow

The 11th time, there is a lot of excitement all over the streets of Kyoto, "KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography" 2023". Catching the attention of music fans is Dennis Morris, a UK Jamaican artist, who accompanied Bob Marley on his UK tour at 18 as a photographer, who has since photographed musicians including Sex Pistols, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Radiohead and Patti Smith. UK Jamaicans will be hosting a two-part event at CLUB METRO as a collaboration project of his photography exhibition 'Colored Black' currently running at KYOTOGRAPHIE with talks & music about a movement that moved the world.
In Part 1, a talk with Dennis Morris and Mr. Satow, Morihiro, a visual culture researcher deeply forged in UK BALCK culture. From the Jamaican British Morris himself, his identity as immigrant, and the atmosphere of the UK Jamaican music scene such as ska, reggae, dub, etc., that transformed into the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
The second part is a deep party that brings together DJs and LIVE acts that embody UK Jamaican sound, such as SHANDI-I and Kuranaka aka 1945. Dennis Morris has also stepped down as MC! Jamaican food stall at the venue!

Satow, Morihiro (Professor of Visual Culture and Media Studies in the Department of Aesthetics and Art Theory, Faculty of Letters, Doshisha University)
Born in Kyoto in 1966, Satow holds a position as a Professor of Visual Culture and Media Studies in the Department of Aesthetics and Art Theory within the Faculty of Letters at Doshisha University. He holds a Ph.D. in Art Theory and conducts research in the field of photography and visual culture in modern and contemporary Japan. Satow has published several works, including Topography and Japanese Modernity: Edo Doro-e, Yokohama Photographs and Art Photography (2011) and others. His research interests also extend to the study of subcultures and pop culture, as evidenced by his publications, which include "Popular Culture and Archive: Expectations and Difficulties" (March 2018), "EVERYONE HAS THEIR PRICE: from Situationist to Punk/Postpunk" (2021), "Visual Culture of Punk" (2021), and "The Style and Design of Rudies: Visual Culture of 2 Tone" (2022), all of which have been featured in the web magazine AMeeT. He is also a member of the Club METRO Archive Project Executive Committee and serves as an advisor for the exhibition Specter (Club METRO, 2022).
